Charles Condomine (Dan Stevens), hans fru Ruth Condomine (Isla Fisher) samt deras vänner mr Bradman (Julian Rhind-Tutt) och hans fru (Emilia Fox) har begett sig till den lokala teaterlokalen där spiritualisten Cecily Arcati (Judi Dench) har en föreställning där hon annonserar att hon kan komma i kontakt med de döda. Hon håller ett säljande och imponerande presentationstal när ljuset går upp på scen:
