The wife

Joe Castleman (Jonathan Pryce) kan inte sova. Han vankar av och an, och väntar på ett telefonsamtal från Stockholm. Kommer han eller kommer han inte få nobelpriset i litteratur i år? Till slut somnar han, men mitt i natten väcks han och hans fru Joan (Glenn Close) av ett telefonsamtal.

Joe: "Hello?"
Arvid: "Hello? Am I speaking to Mr. Joseph Castleman?"
Joe: "Yes. Yes."
Arvid: "This is Mr. Arvid Engdahl calling from the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden."
Joe: "This is not a joke, I take it?"
Arvid: "No, Mr. Castleman, I assure you. If you like I will give you the phone number here, and you can call back."
Joe: "No, that won't be necessary, thank you."
Oh, my God!
Listen, before you go on, I'd like my wife to get on the extension. Would that be all right?"
Arvid: "Yes, of course, I'll wait."
Joan: "Oh, God. Hello? I'm on."
Arvid: "Hello, Mrs. Castleman. Is that you?"
Joan: "Yes."
Arvid: "Mr. Castleman, are you still on as well?"
Joe: "Yes, I am."
Arvid: "It is my great honor and pleasure to tell you, Mr. Castleman, that you have been chosen to receive
this year's Nobel Prize in literature."
Joe: "Thank you. Thank you very much."

Glädjen hos Joe är total, och han visar det genom att - trots sin höga ålder - hoppa i sängen!

Joe: "I won the Nobel! I won the Nobel! What? Joanie, I'm... I'm just being silly."
Joan: "No, I gotta take a shower. We have a long day. Come on down."

Det firas i det Castlemanska hemmet och en av Joans väninnor säger följande:

Väninna: "So you're going to Stockholm? When?"
Joan: "December."
Väninna: "It'll be freezing there. Joe buying you a fur?"
Joan: "No. No, I think I'll be like any decent First Lady and get by with a good cloth coat."

December kommer och Joe och Joan samt deras son David (Max Irons) sätter sig på planet för att besöka Sveriges huvudstad och medverka på nobelprisutdelningen. På planet finns också journalisten Nathaniel Bone (Christian Slater) som länge försökt få Joes tillstånd att skriva hans biografi, men utan framgång. Joe är nästan otrevlig mot Nathaniel,

Nathaniel: "I just wanted to say congratulations."
Joe: "Hello, Nathaniel."
Nathaniel: "Hey."
Joe: "I take it you're not flying to Stockholm purely for the pickled herring."
Nathaniel: "No. I wouldn't miss your award for anything. It's truly an astounding achievement, Joe."
Joe: "It's not about the prize, Nathaniel. It's about getting up the gumption to write the next book."

Så anländer de till Stockholm och när de kommer till hotellet välkomnas de av Arvid Engdahl (Jan Mybrand):

Arvid Engdahl: "Mr. Castleman, welcome to Stockholm. We are so delighted to have you here."
Joe: "Thank you so much."

Arvid fortsätter:

Arvid Engdahl: "Ja, alltså det här är Castlemans hustru. Mr. Castleman, may I introduce you to Walter Bark, who will be accompanying you on your engagements."

De visas till sina rum och morgonen därpå väcks de av ett luciatåg som skrämmer slaget på Joan:

Natten går tunga fjät,
runt gård och stuva.
Kring jord som sol’n förlät,
skuggorna ruva.
Då i vårt mörka hus,
stiger med tända ljus,
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.

Natten var stor och stum.
Nu, hör, det svingar
i alla tysta rum,
sus som av vingar.
Se, på vår tröskel står,
vitklädd med ljus i hår,
Sankta Lucia, Sankta Lucia.
Walter Bark: "Good morning, mr Castleman. This is Sankta Lucia, who has come to show her respect for a great writer."
Joe: "Sorry. Santa Lucia?"
Walter Bark: "Yes, I.. .I believe I informed you about this yesterday."
Joe: "Ah well, you probably did, I.. Oh, that looks wonderful, thank you."

Dagen fortsätter med olika tillställningar, och på en av dem presenterar Joe sin son som "en blivande författare som börjar hitta sin röst". Det landar inte så väl hos David och i bilen på väg till Joes föreläsning så börjar de bråka:

Joan: "David, would you like to spend the rest of the day on your own?"
Joe: "He's going to miss my lecture."
Joan: "David, would you like that?"
David: "Yeah, I would."
Joe: "What are you going to do with yourself?"
David: "It's Stockholm. It's a major European city."

Samma kväll smyger Joe ner till restaurangen och tar sig en sen måltid, en måltid som hans personlige fotograf Linnea (Karin Franz Körlof ) närvarar vid, där Joe försöker smila in sig. Linnes duckar dock och ursäktar sig med att det är sent:

Linnea: "Well, time to go. It's late. Godnatt. Sov så gott."
Joe: "God natt."

Dagen därpå ska Joan ta en tur på stan, men i hotellobbyn stöter hon på Nathaniel Bone igen. Han är aningen mer påstridig än på planet, och försöker locka med Joan till en restaurang i närheten så han kan få bjuda på ett glas.

Nathaniel: "You've always been so kind to me in my aborted attempts at wooing Joe. I'd love to buy you a drink, if I may. There's a lovely bar close by, very 19th century. You can imagine Strindberg getting hammered in there."
Joan: "I don't know how appropriate that would be."
Nathaniel: "Well, it's completely inappropriate. But here we are in Sweden, it's the dead of winter. I don't think either one of us wanna be completely alone in our own brooding thoughts right now, do we?"

Dialogen fortsätter:

Nathaniel: "All right, here's my next fascinating query. What does the Nobel Prize mean to Joseph Castleman?"
Joan: "Oh, God."
Nathaniel: "Yeah. That's not mine. It's not mine. It's from the publisher. Why don't I just use what he said to me on the plane? 'It's not about the prize. It's about getting up the gumption to write the next book.'"

Nathaniel är övertygad om att Joan är den egentligen författaren och att Joe bara är ansiktet utåt, och försöker få Joan att erkänna det. Hon är stoisk, så han tar en chans han hamnar inför dagen därpå när sonen David sitter i baren på hotellet:

David: "Cigaretten?"
Bartender: "Sorry. We don't sell any cigarettes here."
David: "All right."
Nathaniel: "You can have one of mine."

Så kommer kvällen för prisutdelningen.

Prisutdelare: "Mr. Castleman, I would like to convey to you the warm congratulations of the Swedish Academy as I now request you to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature from His Majesty, the King."

Under den påföljande middagen i Blå hallen i Stockholms stadshus presenteras Joe när han ska hålla sitt tacktal av en Nobelvärdinna (Isabelle von Meyenburg):

Värdinna: "Your Majesties, Your Royal Highness, ladies and gentlemen. It is a great honor to introduce the Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Mr. Joseph Castleman."

Joe håller sitt tal, och i det tackar han sin fru, Joan, något som hon bett honom att inte göra. Det sätter igång en serie händelser som gör att de lämnar middagen och åker tillbaks till hotellet där de grälar högt och lågt och där Joan surnar till ordentligt:

Joan: "I can't take the humiliation of holding your coat and arranging your pills and picking the crumbs out of your beard and being shoved aside with all the other wives to talk about some goddamn shopping trip while you say to all the gathering sycophants that your wife doesn't write! Your wife, who just won the Nobel Prize!"
